Why create power supply pinouts?

Power supply pinouts allow PC builders to craft custom sleeved cables, as well as upgrade or reuse their existing components.

Reusing existing cables

Whether you are upgrading power supplies, or changing brands, it is actually possible to reuse certain PC cables.

Creating sleeved PC cables

When crafting your own custom sleeved PC cables, power supply pinouts are essential to wiring the cables correctly.

Researching your components

Selecting an easier pinout during the shopping process can save you time if custom PC cables are on your roadmap.

Upgrading power supplies

If you plan to upgrade power supplies, it can be more effective to select a PSU with the same pinout for reusability.

Modifying the stock cables

Issues may occur when modifying the stock cables, but referencing a pinout can help you complete the project.

Planning your next build

It can be helpful to know the specifications of a pinout when putting together a new build with custom sleeved PC cables.

Phanteks's Pinout

Phanteks is another brand utilizing Seasonic's pinout for several of their power supplies.

Understanding pinouts

How exactly are power supplies different?

It is commonly misunderstood that power supply cables are all the same, no matter the brand. This is not entirely true. While you may see the common 24 pin to 10 pin and 18 pin cable, or 8 pin PCI-E and EPS cables, they might still be keyed, and wired, differently.

Wiring

Not all cables are wired the same. For example, even though you might have a 24 pin to 18 pin and 10 pin cable from Corsair, the same style 24 pin to 18 pin and 10 pin cable from another brand, like Seasonic, will be wired differently. They may also have more, or less, double wires involved. This, ultimately, applies to all cables from each brand's power supplies.

Manufacturer

Some brands use an OEM and sell the power supplies under their own name, like ASUS, while others manufacturer and sell the products themselves, like Seasonic. As a result, it is entirely possible for cables from one power supply to be used with another brand's product, as long as they are confirmed to share the same pinout, and utilize the same connectors.

Connector types

Most power supplies use 8 pin connectors for the cables. However, some brands use the EPS variant, others use the PCI-E variant, and a few even use both. Due to the differences in the way they are keyed, it would not be possible to plug an EPS connector into a power supply that only uses PCI-E connectors, even if the wiring is the same.
