Custom PSU cable
compatibility and pinouts
Explore a growing list of power supply pinouts and wiring
diagrams to help you complete your PC build.
Why create power supply pinouts?
Power supply pinouts allow PC builders to craft custom sleeved cables, as well as upgrade or reuse their existing components.
Reusing existing cables
Whether you are upgrading power supplies, or changing brands, it is actually possible to reuse certain PC cables.
Creating sleeved PC cables
When crafting your own custom sleeved PC cables, power supply pinouts are essential to wiring the cables correctly.
Researching your components
Selecting an easier pinout during the shopping process can save you time if custom PC cables are on your roadmap.
Upgrading power supplies
If you plan to upgrade power supplies, it can be more effective to select a PSU with the same pinout for reusability.
Modifying the stock cables
Issues may occur when modifying the stock cables, but referencing a pinout can help you complete the project.
Planning your next build
It can be helpful to know the specifications of a pinout when putting together a new build with custom sleeved PC cables.
Explore reference pinouts for your project
It is important to only use the pinouts as a reference, and not as your sole source of information. Always be sure to double check your PSU's cables.
Corsair Type 4
Some of the Corsair Type 4 pinout power supplies include units from the RMi, RMx, and SF series.
Corsair Type 3
Corsair's older Type 3 pinout features the yellow label RM units, HXi, and HX gold power supplies.
Seasonic's Pinout
Seasonic standardized the pinouts of their power supplies a few years back through the Seasonic initiative.
EVGA's Pinout
EVGA primarily utilizes their own standardized pinout across multiple different series.
Phanteks's Pinout
Phanteks is another brand utilizing Seasonic's pinout for several of their power supplies.
ASUS's Pinout
ASUS, coincidentally, utilizes the same pinout as Seasonic for numerous power supply units across various series.
How exactly can power supplies be different?
It is commonly misunderstood that power supply cables are all the same, no matter the brand. This is not entirely true.
Wiring
Not all cables are wired the same. For example, even though you might have a 24 pin to 18 pin and 10 pin cable from a brand such as Corsair, the same style 24 pin to 18 pin and 10 pin cable from another brand, like Seasonic, will be wired differently. They may also have more, or less, double wires involved. This, ultimately, applies to all cables from each brand's power supplies.
Manufacturer
Some brands use an OEM and sell the power supplies under their own name, like ASUS, while others manufacturer and sell the products themselves, like Seasonic. As a result, it is entirely possible for cables from one power supply to be used with another brand's product, as long as they are confirmed to share the same pinout, and utilize the same connectors.
Connector types
Most power supplies use 8 pin connectors for the cables. However, some brands use the EPS variant, others use the PCI-E variant, and a few even use both together. Due to the differences in the way they are keyed, it would not be possible to plug an EPS connector into a power supply that only uses PCI-E connectors, even if the wiring is the same between the two.
